Discovered the Desert Agave in full bloom during our recent winter vacation in Las Terrenas D.R. What a stunning plant, with beautiful flowers in a tropical and desert like landscape.

Las Terrenas, D.R. Was eine herrliche Pflanze, mit sehr schönen Blüten in einer tropischen und Wüsten ähnlichen Landschaft.

Desert century-plant’s succulent,
sword-like, blue-green leaves with sharp, marginal teeth and a stiff,
terminal spine form a basal clump 2 ft. high and up to 6 ft. wide.
When the plants are 8-20 years old they send up a sturdy, 6-9 ft.,
flowering stalk bearing large, mounded clusters of pale yellow, tubular flowers. After setting fruit, the entire plant dies.
The dried seed capsules remain conspicuous for many months.

Agaven werden manchmal auch als Jahrhundertpflanze (von engl. „Century Plant“) bezeichnet, da sie nur einmal blühen und bis zur Ausbildung eines Blütenstands mehrere Jahrzehnte vergehen können.

We installed a 'WildView' camera and a new squirrel proof feeder in our garden. My goal was to get better pictures of birds. As of today, squirrels got used to the feeder and birds have more time to enjoy the food. ******
Wir installierten eine Kamera und ein neues Vogelfutterhaus in unserem Garten. Das neue Futterhaus, soll den Eichhörnchen, den Zugriff zum Vogelfutter verhindern. Mein Ziel war es, bessere Fotos von den Vögeln zu erhalten. Die Eichhörnchen, haben sich in der Zwischenzeit auch daran gewöhnt und lassen den Vögeln Zeit zum Fressen.

This year the Japanese Beetle caused a lot of damage in our garden including surrounding areas. The beetle attacks roots, foliage and fruit of a variety of host plants, including roses and dahlias.
During a few days I trapped over 500 beetles around our house.

In diesem Jahr, hat der Japanische Käfer, eine Menge Schaden in unserem Garten und Umgebung, angerichtet. Der Käfer attackiert die Wurzeln, Blätter und Früchte von vielen Pflanzen, wie z.B. Rosen, und Dahlien.
Während ein paar Tagen, habe ich über 500 Käfer gefangen.

Did you know that December 12 is National Poinsettia Day?

I didn't, but the poinsettia has a special day of its own.

In July of 2002, the US House of Representatives created Poinsettia Day.

The date marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, who is credited with introducing the native Mexican plant to the United States. The purpose of the day is to enjoy the beauty of this popular holiday plant. Around Christmas time the Poinsettia is available in many colours

and purchased to decorate our homes.

In Mexico, the plant is called La Flor de la Nochebuena or, Flower of the Holy Night.

On National Poinsettia Day, purchase a plant for yourself or one of your friends.

I will get a plant for my neighbour who takes care of our cat Maximus when we are away.

Waiting for Christmas... Warten auf Weihnachten...

This year we have a eco-friendly Christmas with a potted 'Blue Colorado Spruce' as a Christmas tree. Our local garden nursery offered beautiful trees for sale. The warm weather cooperated and I was able to take our tree home.

In diesem Jahr haben wir ein umweltfreundliches Weihnachtsfest mit einer eingetopften Blautanne ( 'Blue Colorado Spruce') als Weihnachtsbaum.
Unser Gärtnerei hatte sehr schöne Bäume im Sonderverkauf.
Das warme Wetter erlaubte mir, useren kleinen Baum, mit nach Hause zu nehmen.

I placed the tree on our deck and added some decorations.

Now I can see the little Christmas tree every day from our kitchen window.

We are taking the tree indoors on Christmas Eve and planting it outdoors on New Year's Day.

One sunny November afternoon I found Maxi sleeping under our new tree.

Is he dreaming of a white Christmas??

My fall decorations have now changed to more festive arrangements.
The front of the house and backyard features containers and pots
filled with twigs of cedar, spruce and pine cones.
There are hearts, stars and other decorative items to see.

Meine Herbstdekoration habe ich mit festlichen Arrangements verändert.
Vor dem Haus und im Garten sind jetzt große Gefäße und Töpfe
mit Zweigen von Zedern, Fichten und Tannenzapfen gefüllt.
Es gibt Herzen, Sterne und andere dekorative Dinge zu sehen.

Digital 'Wildview' camera - Digitale Wildkamera Squirrels, Squirrels... but no birds...

I received the 'Digital Wildview' camera and squirrel proof bird feeder from my son as a present to capture feeding birds in our garden.

Every morning I checked my camera looked at the pictures and found no birds but squirrels trying to steal the bird food. Nobody is neutral about squirrels. Actually, I like squirrels but s these bushy-tailed critters, give me a lot of problems and I declared squirrel war.

Hope this new feeder will help me to deter the squirrels!!

Squirrels are very smart and possess an agile body, have very adoptable front paws and incredible leaping ability. That allows them to figure out how to raid any of my feeders, including many squirrel-proof bird feeders I have installed in the past years.

Please look at the pictures, those pesky squirrels chased away the birds.

Ich habe die ‚Digitale Wildview‘ Kamera und das 'Eichhörnchen- safe- Futterhäuschen' von meinem Sohn, als Geschenke erhalten, um Vögel in unserem Garten zu fotografieren.

Jeden Morgen habe ich meine Kamera angeschaut, die Bilder geprüft und habe keine Vogelfotos gefunden. Aber viele Eichhörnchenfotos sah ich, die versuchten, das Vogelfutter zu stehlen. Niemand ist vor den Eichhörnchen sicher. Eigentlich mag ich die Eichhörnchen, aber diese buschigen Viecher, haben mir schon viele Probleme bereitet. Eichhörnchen sind sehr klug, flink und besitzen einen sehr beweglichen Körper, sehr anpassungsfähige Füße und unglaubliche Springfähigkeiten. Das erlaubt ihnen, jede meiner Futterstellen zu überfallen und das Vogelfutter zu stehlen.

Bitte schaut Euch die Fotos an, sie zeigen die lästigen Eichhörnchen, wie sie die Vögel verjagen.

Western Conifer Seed Bug - Amerikanische Kiefern- oder Zapfenwanze

A few days ago I found this bug in our house.
After taking a picture and some research I was able to identify this bug as Western Conifer Seed Bug (Leptoglossus occidentalis). This species is called "the leaf-footed bug", and related genera of the Coreidae.
The bug likes to invade homes in September or October to search for a warm winter home. Does not harm people or pets. It was originally native to the warm-temperate western USA (California, Oregon and Nevada), but has in recent times expanded its range and become an invasive species in parts of Canada and Europe.

Nachdem ich ein Foto gemacht und nachgeforscht habe, stellte ich fest , dass es sich um

Die Kiefernwanze sucht im September oder Oktober, nach einem warmen Winterquartier,
in Häusern. Stellt keine Gefahr für Menschen oder Tiere dar.

Die Amerikanische Kiefern- oder Zapfenwanze (Leptoglossus occidentalis) ist eine Wanze aus der Familie der Randwanzen (Coreidae). Das ursprüngliche Verbreitungsgebiet umfasst den Westen Nordamerikas, (Kalifornien, Oregon und Nevada). Kann aber jetzt an der Ostküste der USA und Kanada, sowie in Europa nachgewiesen werden.

Butterfly Weed - Asclepsia tuberosa - Orange Seidenpflanze

I purchased the plants to attract more Monarch Butterflies, insects
and hummingbirds to our garden.
Butterflies and bees arrived shortly after placing two potted plants on our deck.
Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on these plants and I am hopeful
to increase the butterfly population.
Asclepias tuberosa is a species of milkweed native to eastern North America.

Ich erwarb diese Pflanzen, um viele Monarchfalter, Insekten und Kolibris
in unseren Garten, anzulocken. Nachdem ich die Pflanzen, auf unsere Veranda stellte,
erschienen in Kürze, die ersten Schmetterlinge und Bienen.
Monarchfalter legen ihre Eier auf diese Pflanzenblätter ab und ich hoffe,
auf diese Art, diese Falter zu vermehren.

After a few day the leaves are dry.

They are loosing some of the colour and shape.

But the wreath still looks good but tousled.

Kranz mit getrockneten Ahornblättern.

Nachdem die Blätter getrocknet sind, verlieren sie etwas anFarbe.

Die Spitzen der Blätter verbiegen sich. Der Kranz sieht aber noch gut aus.

Der Kranz sieht aber etwas zerzaust aus, wie man sehen kann.

Ornamental grasses - Ziergräser - Rosetta McClains Garden

In recent years ornamental grasses have become increasingly popular

and are grown in many gardens and parks as ornamental plants.

Grasses are tolerant of many soil types and thrive with lots of sun.

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' grasses grow in more shady areas as well.

What else I like about ornamental grasses?

They provide a good food source for birds and butterflies.

Here are some pictures from my last visit to Rosetta McClain Gardens in Scarborough.

In den letzten Jahren sind dekorative Gräser zunehmend populär geworden und wachsen heute in vielen Gärten und Parks als sehr dekorative Pflanzen.
Gräser sind anspruchslos und gedeihen mit viel Sonne.
Hakonechloa macra „Aureole“ Gräser wachsen aber auch im Schatten.
Was gefällt mir sonst an dekorativen Gräser?
Sie bieten eine eine gute Futterquelle für Vögel und Schmetterlinge.

They are easy to care for, provide excellent wildlife habitats, and are sustainable.

The question I ask my self how to select ornamental grasses for our garden?

Cup-and-Saucer Vine
Cobaea scandens discovered in Rosetta McClains Garden, Scarborough.
Also known as cathedral bells, this vigorous vine is a quick growing ornamental climbing plant from Mexico with large plum shaped leaves and large bell-shaped purplish flowers.
Start indoors early spring. A perennial in frost free regions.
Who has planted the Cup-and-Saucer Vine in their garden?
Hummingbirds must love this plant!!

Noticed a damaged Paper Wasp (Polistes dominula) nest in this small tree.
The nest is now deserted. Please notice the construction of the nest, very interesting indeed.

Es wurde von der Französischen Feldwespe (Polistes dominula) gebaut und ist jetzt unbewohnt. Man kann die Konstruktion des Nestes sehen, sehr interessant.

American Red Squirrel - Tamiasciurus hudsonicus
photographed in Rosetta McClain Garden in Scarborough, Ontario.
This squirrel followed me for a while and hoped for some peanuts - sorry not this time.

The American Red Squirrel is widely distributed across North America and is quite small.
Body-weight is about 200 - 300 grams and the body measures 16-23 cm, tail is 9-16 cm long. Their range includes the majority of Canada and extends south into the United States

Very cute - sehr niedlich...
Die Rothörnchen (Tamiasciurus), in den USA auch als Chickarees bekannt,
sind eine Gattung der Hörnchen, die heute zu den Baumhörnchen gerechnet werden.
Das hier gezeigte Gemeine Rothörnchen (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus),
kommt in Kanada und den USA vor.

Discovering the Nawautin Nature Sanctuary

Recently, we discovered a beautiful nature sanctuary located in the

Township of Alnick, Haldimand near Grafton Ontario. Nestled at the mouth of the Grafton Creek on the shores of Lake Ontario, you'll find one of Northumberland's jewels.

The Nawautin Nature Sanctuary was constructed over 20 years ago.

It features a series of inter-connected ponds, a waterfall, nesting islands for birds,

and several walking trails.

Walk with me through this nature paradise...

Large ponds are surrounded by wild flowers and plants.

If there is magic on the planet, it is contained in the water.

One very interesting plant (vine) caught my eye. Never seen before....

Apios americana, sometimes called the potato bean, hopniss, Indian potato or groundnut (but not to be confused with other plants sometimes known by the name groundnut) is a perennial vine native to eastern North America, and bears edible beans and large edible tubers. It grows to 3–4 m long, with pinnate leaves 8–15 cm long with 5–7 leaflets. The flowers are red-brown to purple, produced in dense racemes.

The fruit is a legume (pod) 6–12 cm long.

The tubers are crunchy and nutritious, with a high content of starch and especially protein. The plant was one of the most important food plants of pre-European North America, and is now being developed for domestication.

busy week ...water main break ... Wasserrohrbruch vor dem Haus...

A small water main break in front of our house caused some problems.
After calling 311 City of Toronto's hot line City workers arrived very quickly, assessed the situation and fixed the broken water pipe. The crew filled the big hole, new grass replaced the damaged area and repaired the driveway.
Well done...
The City of Toronto websites states that an average of 1,400 water main breaks occur annually. Lot's of water goes down the drain because of mechanical or structural failure of underground pipes. Besides Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke has the highest break rates because of their water mains are located in heavy clay soil as opposed to sandy soil.

Last year, I was able to create a large wreath with Mountain-ash (Sorbus americana) berries as shown on the right side of my blog.
This year I used Mountain-ash berries and hydrangea flowers.
I love the colours of the wreath, ornamental gourds and Hubbard squash.
Fall colours for the month of October!!

After reading the new book from Timber Press, Oregon, USA I was really exited to start my own small hosta collection. During the summer I watched my tiny hosta plants grow and later bloom in blue shades.
Nachdem ich das neue Buch von Timber Press, Oregon USA gelesen habe, war ich sehr begeistert, to start meine eigene kleine Hosta (Funkien) Kollektion. Während des Sommers beobachtete ich die kleinen Pflanzen wachsen und später blühten sie in blau.

Zu empfehlen... der Roseneibisch (Hibiscus moscheutos), oder Sumpfeibisch. Eine Pflanzenart aus der Gattung Hibiskus (Hibiscus) in der Familie der Malvengewächse (Malvaceae). Winterhart und mehrjährige krautige Pflanze. Sie erreicht Wuchshöhen bis über 2 Meter. Bei uns im Garten sind es buschige Pflanzen. Die oberirdischen Pflanzenteile sterben im Winter ab; treibt aber im Frühling neu aus dem Wurzelstock aus.
In der Collage sind verschiedene Pflanzen zu sehen, die seit 2007 in unserem Garten wachsen.
Die Blüten haben einen Durchmesser bis zu 30cm und lieben einen sonnigen Platz.

I photographed the fruit of the Star Magnolia 'Leonard Messel' (Magnolia Stellata).
These magnolias produce a green, knobby aggregate fruit about 2 inches long that matures
and opens in early autumn.

Asclepias tuberosa is a species of milkweed native to eastern North America. It is a perennial plant growing to 0.3-1 m (1 -3 feet) tall, with clustered orange or yellow flowers from early summer to early fall. The leaves are spirally arranged, lanceolate, 5-12 cm long and 2-3 cm broad.
It is commonly known as Butterfly Weed because of the butterflies that are attracted to the plant by its color and its copious production of nectar. It is also the larval food plant of the Queen
(Danaus gilippus) and Monarch butterflies . Hummingbirds, bees and other insects are also attracted.

The Emerald Ash-borer (EAB) has been discovered in many areas in Canada and the USA.

Agrilus planipennis or Agrilus marcopoli, native of Asia.

The Emerald Ash-borer has killed millions of ash trees in southwestern Ontario and other areas. Now the beetle has been found in Guildwood as well. The infestation poses a major economic and environmental threat to urban and forested areas. The cost of removing infested trees is quite substantial and a financial burden to many home owners. What can be done to save our trees?

Recently the beetle was spotted on our porch.

We park our car quite often close to a very large and old ash tree in front of our house.
The tree is about 60 -70 years old and showed some decline during the past 15 years.
Dry branches have been removed or broken off.
One day we found an very interesting beetle in our car.

After searching for this beetle on the internet I learned that this is indeed a native Ashborer in Ontario.
Now, I have found more signs of the Red-headed Ashborer.
After taking pictures of infested trees in Robert Bateman Park (a.k.a).Kate Gardener Beltline Park, Toronto I received a comment on my Guildwod Village Blog confirming the Red-headed Ashborer.
Both beetles cause the same damage on trees but look totally different. (see pictures)
Please compare:
Emerald Ash-borer exit holes are most likely to be D-shaped and 3 mm - 1/8".
Red-headed Ashborer exit holes are round and about 6 mm -1/4" .

Der Asiatische Eschenprachtkäfer gefährded alle Eschen in den USA sowie in Canada.
Große Gebiete in Nordamerika sind bereits befallen.
Aller Wahrscheinlichkeit wurde der Käfer mit Transportpaletten aus Eschenholz von China in die Vereinigten Staaten eingeführt. Von dort breitete er sich schnell aus.
Es wird befürchtet , dass der Käfer sich im gesamten natürlichen Verbreitungsgebiet
der Gattung Fraxinus in Nordamerika etablieren könnte.

More good news from the garden...

In spite of a long heatwave with soaring temperatures up to 38 Celsius,

our garden survived the dry spell with a lot of water from our water irrigation system

I installed a few years ago.

Trotz der langen, anhaltenden Hitzeperiode, mit Temperaturen bis zu 38 Celsius, hat unser Garten, durch meine selbsteingebaute Wasserirrigation, diese Trockenheit gut überstanden.

Looper Caterpillar feeding on geranium flowers.

Thistle caterpillars injure plants by defoliation. Adult is the Painted Lady butterfly.

Japanese Beetles, the most damaging beetle in our garden this year.
This is the first year, I have seen so many Japanese Beetle feeding on roses, canna leaves, dahlia flowers and many other plants.

Right now, I have no flowering roses or dahlias in the garden.

To fight the infestation I shake the plant, this scares the beetle and they fall to the ground.

Collected beetles are killed a container filled with soapy water.

“Japanischer Käfer” heißt dieser kleine Käfer, der 1912 von Japan in die USA eingeschleppt wurde. Seitdem breitet er sich in den Westen der USA und Kanada aus. Im Gegnsatz zu Japan hat er keine natürlichen Feinde. Bei uns haben die Käfer grossen Schaden angerichtet.
Ich habe fast blühenden keine Rosen oder Dahlia mehr.

Here are my first collages from our spring garden in 2011.

After a very cold and wet month of May high temperatures and humidity prompted the City of Toronto to issue its first heat alert of the year. Advising residents to drink lots of fluids, stay out of the sun and seek relief in places with air conditioning. Weather experts believe most of Canada is in store for a warmer-than-normal summer. I don't mind, I love sunhine....

Hier sind meine ersten Collagen von unserem Garten in 2011.

Nach einem sehr kalten und nassen Monat Mai, hohe Temperaturen und grosse Luftfeuchtigkeit veranlasste gestern die Stadt Toronto, den ersten Hitzealarm des Jahres auszugeben. Es wurde Einwohnern geraten, viel Flüssigkeiten zu trinken, Aufenthalt in der Sonne zu beschränken und Erleichterung in Orten mit Klimaanlage zu suchen. Wetterexperten erwarten in den meisten Gegenden von Kanada einen wärmeren-als-normalen Sommer. Ich habe keine Bedenken, ich liebe Sonnenschein:)

Hens and Chicks have grown bigger than my hand. The wet weather seems to be good for the plants.

Lots of rain and fog over Guildwood...

After more than a month of relentless rain and grey skies, Toronto has to endure another soggy weekend. Since the start of May, the city has seen 135.8 mm of rain, a lot more rain than normal. Not much sunshine in Toronto since April 1 either. But Monday will bring 30 degree temperatures and many sunny days, I hope:)
The garden ist very wet, but flowers as well as weeds grow very nicely.

Nach mehr als einem Monat von Dauerregen und grauem Himmel, muss Toronto nochmal ein nasses Wochenende durchhalten. Seit dem Anfang Mai erhielt die Stadt 135,8 mm Regen, viel mehr Regen als wir normaler weise erhalten. Auch nicht viel Sonnenschein seit dem 1. April.
Aber am kommenden Montag erwarten wir Temperaturen von 30 C und viel Sonne, hoffe ich:)
Der Garten ist sehr nass, aber Blumen und Unkraut wachsen sehr gut.

The breathtaking landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Middle Rhine Valley” and the rich legacy of Koblenz’s 2000 year urban history provide a fitting backdrop for such a major event as the Federal Horticultural Show 2011 in Germany.
The site comprises three individual core areas for exhibitions and showcase attractions.
It stretches from the Electoral Palace to the Blumenhof courtyard between the old town and
Deutsches Eck and ends at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. All three core areas will remain as permanent features after 2011, enhancing the town with attractive recreational spaces.

Hier sollen 6.500 Rosen in 250 Sorten, von alten bis hin zu den neuesten Züchtungen gezeigt werden, wie die „Schönen Koblenzerin“, die noch auf keiner BUGA gezeigt wurden.

Zur Zeit waren Wechselbepflanzung mit 600.000 blühenden Tulpen und die verschiedensten Stauden zu sehen und sorgten für ein weiteres optisches Highlight.

Ein sehr kreatives Blumengesteck mit alten Weinreben und Moos - mir gefällt es sehr.

We left Ehrenbreitstein Fortress with the cable car across the Rhine River and visited

the Basilika St. Kastor, Koblenz surrounded lovely flower beds.

The Basilica of St. Castor (German: Basilika St. Kastor or Kastorkirche) is the oldest church in Koblenz in the German state of Rhineland Palatinate. It is located near Deutsches Eck at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle. This church is worth seeing for the historical events that have occurred in it, its extensive Romanesque construction and its largely traditional furnishings.

Since 2002, the Basilica of St. Castor has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. In addition, it is a cultural property protected under the Hague Convention.

Die Basilika St. Kastor (auch: Kastorkirche) ist die älteste Kirche in Koblenz. Sie befindet sich hinter dem Deutschen Eck. Auf dem Vorplatz der Basilika steht der so genannte Kastorbrunnen aus napoleonischer Zeit. Papst Johannes Paul II. hat am 30. Juli 1991 die Kastorkirche zur „basilica minor“ erhoben. Diese Kirche, in der deutsche Geschichte gemacht wurde, ist wegen ihres umfassend erhaltenen romanischen Baubestandes und der zum großen Teil überlieferten Ausstattung sehenswert.
Seit 2002 ist die Basilika St. Kastor Teil des UNESCO-Welterbes Oberes Mittelrheintal, des Weiteren ist sie ein geschütztes Kulturgut nach der Haager Konvention.

We enjoyed the beautiful flowers, the food and wheat beer, the sights and the hospitality of the people in Koblenz we met during the day. Just before leaving the BUGA 2011 I found this lovely ceramic owl.

Now we are back home again after a sunny, warm and wonderful trip to Germany.We enjoyed the hospitality and caring of our family during our stay.Thank you to all of you making our Germany trip the best ever. The time was too short to do all the trips on my list but I spent one day at the
BUGA - Bundesgartenshow in Koblenz. What a great experience!!
Detailed report will follow shortly. The City of Toronto presented itself not very warm and sunny.
Spring did not arrive during our absence. Only a few daffodils and tulips bloom in our Guildwood garden.
The grass is greener but no leaves on our trees. What a difference to Germany - a country full in bloom.

Wir sind wieder zu Hause, nach einer sonnigen, warmen und herrlichen Reise nach Deutschland.
Wir freuten uns über die Gastfreundschaft und Fürsorge unserer Familie während unseres Auftenthaltes.

Der Frühling war während unserer Abwesenheit leider nicht angekommen, nur einige Tulpen und Osterglocken blühen im Garten. Das Gras ist grüner aber keine Blätter an den Bäumen.
Was ein Unterschied zu Deutschland - ein Land voller Blüten.
